Nusa Penida - Weekend Island Hopping

We were blessed with a 3 day weekend and took full advantage by rushing out of school to catch our 30 minute boat ride over to a neighboring island called Nusa Penida. We rented a motorbike from a man as soon as we stepped off the boat and spent the next 2 1/2 days exploring the island.

Nusa Penida is less developed than it's neighbor Nusa Lembongan. We were pleasantly surprised by the flat paved main road that led to our hotel. However, we soon realized that not all roads were created equal on this island.

We explored Temeling's Natural Pools. We parked the bike at the top and walked down the path that led to the pool. It was about a 40 minute walk. There were many who drove their bike down this sketchy path, but I was happy to be walking!

I had read that there were two pools. We walked down the steps along this huge limestone wall. The larger pool at the top was filled with some boys playing and splashing around. The second pool, well we thought it was the second pool, was quite small. We relaxed on the rocks for a bit soaking in the view...crashing waves against the rocks, crystal clear blue water, and a man fishing off the top of a large rock.

We stumbled upon this amazing vegan restaurant with a stunning view. We ate their for lunch on both days. :) Too delicious to resist!

3 years ago Ted and I first travelled to Nusa Lembongan together with some friends to go snorkeling for the weekend. After a morning of snorkeling, we jumped off the boat and swam up to this small little beach with no one on it. Ted, being the excellent navigator that he is found the beach from land this time around!

We used google maps as far as we could, parked the bike and set off on foot following a path we hoped would lead us to the beach. After a few minutes of walking we spotted a sign and turned down another path. We walked by some cows and pigs then saw a woman sitting outside a small cement building. Yeah we walked through her land! This was not the way to the beach. So much for that sign! Back we went and finally after slowly winding down the mountain side we reached the beach with only two other people on it. :)

The following day we were feeling a bit tired from our two big hikes the previous day, but ventured off to see Kelingking beach which was famous for its T-Rex like formation. It was a bumpy adventure to get there. The main road was well paved, but we learned any other road off that main road was not in good condition. Slowly and steadily we made our way in, around, and through some huge holes and puddles on the road. The view was spectacular, but we were chose not to climb down to the beach mainly because there was a sign that told us not to (rains had caused the path to deteriorate) and also because we were tired from our adventure yesterday and wanted to relax! Lots of people there making sure they got their selfies, but I found a quiet place to just sit and enjoy the view for a few minutes.

We spent the rest of the day and the following morning relaxing on Crystal Bay Beach which was only a few minutes drive from our hotel.

We're looking forward to going back to Penida again. Next time we are staying in a tree house at Atuh Beach! :) We loved the island...off the beaten path a bit, less touristy and built up.
