Back to the US...Job Fair Time!
When I came back to Brazil at the end of July, I thought for sure I would stay another year. I was interested in applying for the new literacy coach position at school and wanted a year of calm...no life changing events. But life doesn't always work out the way you plan....Sometimes it works out better than you imagined :) The last few years have been challenging and I have been through some big life changes and I thought a year of just enjoying life without making a big change would be a breath of fresh air. But due to several circumstances I won't be discussing on this public blog ;) and after some long talks with friends and family as well as some quiet time thinking, I felt it was time to move on. The school and the city of Porto Alegre are not the best fit for me and I was ready to begin that journey of finding a place that was. :)
When I first got home to the States with my brother after our trip, it was hard for me to thoroughly relax and enjoy my time with family because I knew the job fair was coming up the following week. I had to tell my current school in November that I would not be returning the following year, which meant I quit a job before taking on another one. Scary.
There are multiple job fairs all around the world for international teaching. After extensive research, I decided on attending the London Job Fair with Search Associates as it offered more schools with the PYP program I was looking for. Just as I had this deep desire to live in Brazil, I suddenly felt the need to move to Asia....I was interested in the Thailand and Indonesia area where I could be close to a beach. Let's be honest, if I have to option of choosing where I live, I want to be near the beach. It is my favorite place to be. :)
Honestly, international teaching is the best kept secret. Shhh don't tell anyone! It's an amazing opportunity to live in another country and immerse yourself in another culture while living a very comfortable lifestyle. My school provides my housing, cable, internet, and bus money to work. My monthly expenses are only my cell phone bill and a small electric bill. I have the ability to travel to new places I have never been to. Every day is a new adventure. I feel grateful and blessed to have this opportunity. Do I think I can do this for the rest of my life? I'm not sure. But I know I'm not ready to give it up yet as I'm having too much fun!
Soooo on to the job fair......The job fair is an intense 3 days. Thursday is filled with school presentations where you learn about the schools. Friday morning, interview sign ups begin...better known as speed dating. If you do your homework, you should already have an idea of which schools you want to interview and made previous contact before the fair. Basically, there is a large ballroom in a hotel where tables are set up for each school. You approach the table and give them your sales pitch of why they should hire you. If they like you, you will schedule an interview with them later that day or the following day. If not, you turn around and move on to the next!
I was a little worried going into the sign ups because some schools I was interested ended up not having openings for elementary, but I landed all the interviews I was looking for!
By Sunday, the decision was made. I actually slept well the night before and enjoyed my big breakfast without feeling nauseous!
Starting in July, my new home will be on the small island of Bali! It is a providence of Indonesia. I will be teaching Kindergarten at Bali International School which is about 1 mile from Sanur beach...known for its calmness and tranquility....exactly what I need. I think this is going to be exactly what I need. The school is smaller than I was originally looking for, but I'm excited to be teaching Kindergarten and continuing the PYP program. AND I have always wanted to live at the beach and now I will be living on this beautiful island.
Before leaving London though, I did go out and explore a little bit. I never really had a desire to go to London and the cold weather wasn't making me excited about getting out there and exploring, but once I did, I loved it. I hope to go back one day and explore more!
