One Proud Teacher!

I know I'm in my 8th year of teaching but I was still feeling nervous about the parent teacher conferences. I think it was mostly because I am new and the format of the conferences are different. They have 3-way conferences in which the students attend the conferences and share pieces of their work with their parents. It's nice because it takes the pressure off of me, because the students talk and share what they are doing well and what they can improve upon. The language barrier was a little difficult at times because although my assistant and even the students themselves helped to translate, it felt more distant since I wasn't communicating directly with the parents.

Conferences went very well today! We had conferences from 1-6pm today and then from 8am-12pm tomorrow. Yes, on a Saturday...yuck! The kids did a great job sharing their 4 pieces of work the chose yesterday and the parents were very pleased with how things were going so far!

One of the conferences brought tears to my eyes. I wish I had videotaped my student's presentation of her work to her mom. I have learned through her past teachers that she has come a long way in the past 3 years, but still has trouble focusing and completing work to name a few things. :) But I absolutely LOVE this girl! She is her own individual person...for example this week she wore a different sticker on her nose each day! Another day she wore two different shoes and when I asked her if she knew she was wearing two different shoes her response was, "Oh yeah I know. I did that on purpose. I wanted to wear two different shoes today." Ha!

Anyway, she was so articulate today in presenting each piece. She was able to describe the skills she was working on for each piece, why the skill was important, how she did on the work, and how she can make improvements for next time. You would have thought I had rehearsed this with her prior! I didn't do anything! Her mom was impressed and then even more impressed when I told her I didn't help her at all. She picked out the pieces and she did the presentation herself! I was soo proud of her and realized although she doesn't look like she is paying attention, she is in fact absorbing everything...every little comment I say and every skill I'm trying to teach her! I was one proud teacher! What a great way to end the work week!
