Wait...What Did We Order?

Friday, August 23rd,  my friend and I decided to walk around and find a new restaurant for dinner. Brazilians have a late dinner and most restaurants don't open until 7 pm for dinner. I don't know if I will ever get used to, or want to get used to, eating that late at night. After having a glass of wine at the apartment, it was finally late enough to start heading to dinner. As we walked down the street on this cold rainy night, we began to feel despair when we noticed some places were still closed! Just when I was beginning to feel crabby from being cold, wet, and hungry and ready to give up, we saw this cute restaurant with lots of people inside...our clue to knowing it must be good! It was called Al Nur. Since our Portuguese is still on the non existent side we didn't have much of a clue what the menu said. We could, however, find the vine and beer list! After ordering our drinks, we began scanning the other tables to see what people were eating. Everyone seemed to have the same food. Lots of dishes on their tables filled with a variety of dips, meats, and pastries. So we looked back at the menu and decided to order the special (with meat of course.- these Brazilians love their meat)  Through our small amount of Portuguese and many hand signals later we discovered from the waiter that we could share the special.

Within a few minutes the dips arrived with some pita bread. Delicious! Then we noticed there was a plate of meat...raw meat. As we ate the pita and tried out the variety of dips, we thought, is this it? These dips will not be enough to fill me up. And was raw meat the only meat we would be receiving? The table next to us received sausages. They looked and smelled delicious. We were beginning to wonder, what exactly DID we order? We ushered the waiter over (Since tip is included they do not attend to you like they do in the states. You have to flag them down!) We pointed and tried to explain that we wanted the sausage like the other table and thought we ordered it! Yes...mission accomplished!

Then a few minutes later, the plates of food just starting coming and coming and coming! We went from having no food to food that could be shared with 7 people! Different types of meat, rice, soup, pastries...we laughed as we realized "the special" was much more food than we imagined!  Everything was delicious! But there was no way we could eat it all...not even half of it all! And to think we were worried we wouldn't have enough to eat....
